CBS receives Christmas gift, of sorts, from the Province

By Mark Squibb

While the presentation, discussion, and approval of Budget 2024 ate up most of the Town of Conception Bay South’s December 19 public council meeting, there were some other matters to be taken care of before the holiday festivities got underway.

For one, council agreed to accept conveyance of Midway Access, Middle Ridge Access, Peachytown Access, and a portion of Tilleys Road South from the provincial government.

Planning and Development chairman councillor Rex Hillier explained the construction of the Peacekeepers Highway cut through those roads, necessitating the creation of the access roads.

“In order to permit traffic to circulate in those area, short access roads were developed, and up until this this point, they have stayed within the hands of the Province, and the Province is now saying, ‘Merry Christmas, we’ll pass this off to you,’” said Hillier.

Council also agreed to take over its portion of Buckingham Drive from the provincial government.

Much of the road runs through Paradise, but a small segment connects to Fowlers Road in Conception Bay South. Vineyard Drive, where the municipal boundary bisects a number of homes leaving Paradise residents with Conception Bay South backyards, is just off Buckingham Drive in the same area.

Mayor Darrin Bent jokingly asked whether the Province was going to repave any of the roads before handing them over.

Hillier replied in the negative, and added that despite being provincial government roads, the Town had been servicing them anyway.
