Given the enviable size of its business base, nobody need ever get stuck for a choice of where to eat in Bay Roberts.

Now diners will enjoy yet another option – a Ukrainian cafe.

Mayor Walter Yetman gave some of the particulars Tuesday evening in introducing the permit application.

“We have a building and development application for a proposed business at 202-204 Conception Bay Highway,” said the mayor. “They have asked council for permission to convert the building into a Ukrainian cafe. That is wonderful.”

Yetman noted the recommendation from staff was to give approval in principle for a commercial renovation permit pending Service NL’s approval and that once construction is completed for Town staff to carry out a fire and life safety inspection to permit occupancy.

Councillor Silas Badcock moved that council do just that. Councillor Dean Franey seconded the motion.

“I’m happy to see it,” said Franey. “We need something like this in the town.”

Yetman allowed it adds a bit of diversity to the community.

“Welcome to Bay Roberts, I’m going to say,” said Babcock. “We’re looking forward to it.”

Yetman agreed. “Hopefully they’ll get it up and running and do really well,” he said. “I’d certainly like to support that.”

Badcock’s motion passed unanimously.
