Each year, Softball Canada awards a male and female player the Ethel Boyce Achievement Award for accomplishments on and off the field.

Twenty-year old Adrian Green from Carbonear is the male recipient of this year’s award.

The Ethyl Boyce Achievement Award was created in 1988 by Ruth A. Laing in memory of her sister. Boyce was passionate about helping young athletes achieve in both softball and in life, and the award was created to recognize those qualities in the softball community.

Like the award’s namesake, Green is passionate about giving back to the community, noting how his success has depended on those helping him.

“I like giving back as well, helping younger generations, helping these young athletes get better every day and try to reach their goals as well,” he said.

Green mentors young athletes whenever he can, often by offering one-on-one advice at baseball training camps.

He attributes his own success to those who’ve helped him along the way, including coaches, volunteers, and his ever supportive family. Green said he wouldn’t have been able to do it on his own.

“To get to the level I’m at right now, it wouldn’t have been possible without mentorship,” he admitted. “It takes a village to raise an athlete.”

Most recently, Green’s team took home the bronze medal at the 2023 World Baseball Softball Confederation U18 Men’s Softball World Cup In Hermosillo, Mexico, and another bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships in Columbia.

Looking to the future, Green will keep training in the off season and hopes to make the U23 Men’s National Team.

Green recognizes the discouragement that comes with the trials and tribulations of the aspiring athlete, but his best advice to young players is simply to stick with it.

“If you’re passionate about a sport there’s going to be hardships and hard times, but that’s ultimately what contributes to the positives,” he said. “Tournaments and going to practices, early mornings; that’s what becomes memories.”
