CBS Literacy Council offers parting gift

After more than two decades of quiet behind the scenes work, members of the Conception Bay South Literacy Council say the organizations has met its objectives and is disbanding, but not without making a final donation of $600 from its treasury to the CBS public library.

The committee, which was formed 25 years ago, provided parents of newborns with literacy kits, which were delivered by Community Health nurses.  The kits included various items of benefit to the children, as well as quality children’s literature and a calendar that provided many learning opportunities for both the parents and their newborn baby.

The council focused on raising awareness of the importance of reading to children from birth. It also provided quality literature kits, designed for and delivered to local registered day cares in CBS. The kits have since been delivered to the Public Library where Day Cares may borrow them, said spokesperson Janice King.

Story books were also given by the council to one year old’s when they received needles at the Community Health Clinic, and the council’s duties later expanded to collecting gently used books for the Community Food Sharing location.

“These community services were funded through donations from school children, local schools, service groups, corporations, municipal government, and the citizens of Conception Bay South,” King noted. “As the goals of the council have been reached, the current council members have decided to donate the remaining revenue to the CBS public library for the purchase of children’s literature… The many council members, over the 25 years, express sincere gratitude to our community citizens who have enabled these most worthwhile endeavours to benefit our children. Thank you, too, to the many volunteers who gave their time and effort serving on the C.B.S. Literacy Council.”
