Town appoints two new faces to Long Pond Harbour Authority

The vice commodore of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club and an oil industry executive are the Town of Conception Bay South’s newest appointees to the board of directors of the Long Pond Harbour Authority.

Councillor-at-Large Christine Butler made the motion at last week’s council meeting to appoint John Brophy as a business advisor for a four-year term starting this month, and Kristopher Drodge as the recreation advisor for the same period.

“Earlier this year the Town issued a call for expressions of interest for individuals to apply for two board positions that became available through the expiration of terms for both the business and recreational advisors,” said Butler. “These two positions are required to be appointed by the Town. At the request of council, staff met with each of the interested parties and noted that all candidates were keenly interested in the economic development and long-term sustainability of the port.”

Butler said Capt. Drodge, in addition to his position with the yacht club, has extensive professional and volunteer experience “in the ocean economy.” Brophy, meanwhile, has an MBA specializing in maritime management, and two decades work behind him in the oil industry.

“It’s great to see people come forward with these qualifications when you go out looking for members for that board,” said Councillor-at-Large Rex Hillier. “The skills and experience and so on that these people bring forward is great to see.”

“There’s certainly lots of serious experience there,” agreed Mayor Darrin Bent.
