Tractor trailers a concern on Country Road

By Mark Squibb/October 14, 2022

Deputy Mayor Geoff Seymour has brought forward a concern raised by a resident on Country Road.

It involves heavy tractor trailers that use the quiet road as a thoroughfare — despite signage prohibiting them.

“It’s a narrow street, a residential street,” said Seymour. “They’re using it during the day and night, but at night it’s a real nuisance… The sign is there, it’s just a matter of enforcing it.”

Seymour said the solution might be as simple as contacting the trucking companies, but if the problem persists, the Town may have to call the RCMP.

CAO Nigel Black said the first step is to ensure proper signage is in place.

There is a sign at the western end opening onto LT Stick Drive, but council could not recollect a sign at the opposing end, which opens onto the main road.

Councillor Perry Bowering said he believed there used to be a sign at either end.

Mayor Walter Yetman added that trucks drive the length of Country Road rather than turning onto Sawdust Road because vehicles coming off Sawdust are only permitted to turn left.

Council agreed to refer the matter to its protective services director to verify whether the signs are in place.

The resident also asked if council would install a digital speed sign on Country Road to counter speeding generally. Seymour allowed that isn’t a bad idea.

Council agreed to get a cost estimate and refer it to future budget discussions.
