Read MorePrior to the puck drop for the start of an East Coast Hockey League game at the CBS Arena on Saturday, the “home team” Newfoundland Growlers presented the Town of Conception Bay South with a $15,000 cheque for local charities. It was gesture of gratitude for CBS coming to the Growlers’ rescue by supplying them with a home rink when the team was unexpectedly vacated from the Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s because of a dispute with St. John’s city council. Read MoreCHAMPIONSHIP FEELING—The Queen Elizabeth High girls captured the province’s 4A soccer championship on the weekend, defeating the Gonzaga Vikings 4-3 Sunday in a tight match that saw the Pioneers down 3-1 with eight minutes to go, before rallying with three markers to catch and pass the St. John’s squad. The win marked QE’s first provincial soccer banner in 24 years. Lauren Rowe led the tournament scoring with 13 goals. Chelsea Tibbo recorded two clean sheets as keeper in the Round Robin versus Gonzaga and Exploits Valley.
