Councilors see tax break for Paradise basketball academy as a slam dunk

By Mark Squibb/March 10, 2022

The Town of Paradise has approved a tax reduction request from a local basketball academy.

“The town offers a three year, 50-percent business tax reduction for new, non-competing businesses,” explained Deputy Mayor Kim Street. “The tax reduction is 50 per cent of the business tax only; all other taxes apply.”

RKK Holding Inc., operating as CE23 Academy, had requested the tax break from the Town.

“CE23 Academy is a basketball training facility offering training for younger kids to adults,” said Street. “The facility provides full-sized basketball courts, up-to-date training equipment, and experienced coaches for an enhanced training experience.”

Street said the academy is the only private basketball school in the province with its own facility, and the only basketball training facility in Paradise. She noted the business received its occupancy permit in September 2021, and the tax incentive request was submitted within the first year of operation, as per the policy.

Councilor Larry Vaters praised the Kenmount Road business and offered his approval of the reduction.

“This is another great recreational activity and facility in Paradise,” said Vaters. “I, along with other members of council, had a tour of the facility back in the fall and it was evident that the owner has put a tremendous amount of effort into making the facility a reality.”
