Paradise adopts new tax discount
By Mark Squibb
The Town of Paradise has officially implemented its new low income tax assistance program.
The 25 percent discount was introduced in Budget 2026 as a means of replacing the seniors tax discount, which council says it can no longer offer due to provincial legislation.
“Unfortunately, under the Towns and Local Service Districts Act, discounts based solely on age are not permitted,” said Deputy Mayor Kimberley Street. “Council had considerable deliberation over the change, but ultimately, as municipal officials, we’re obligated to follow provincial legislation.”
The new discount is based on household income levels and will be open to all eligible residents. The discount pertains only to residential property tax and does not include fees for water and sewer services or waste collection. The discount does not renew automatically, and residents will need to apply each year.
Residential property taxes are due March 13. Residents who do not pay their taxes in full, or make payment arrangements with Town staff ahead of the due date will be charged one percent interest per month on their tax bill.
