For many people in Conception Bay South it’s not Christmas until they’ve made a donation to the Riley Mercer Memorial Christmas Toy Drive. And so they showed up in droves again this year at the Salvation Army Church in Long Pond to donate thousands of dollars worth of toys, as well as over $4,000 in donations and gift cards for children in need. The event is held annually on December 10 to mark the passing of Riley Mercer and his sister Alex Mercer whose battles against cancer inspired the community and the province. The Toy Drive was created by their parents Bernie and Louise Mercer. Bernie was unable to attend the toy drive and memorial service this year because he was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Mantle Cell Lyphoma, a blood cancer, and is receiving treatment. Louise said she and Bernie are grateful to everyone for their continuing support. Mark Squibb photo
