Choice piece of Topsail real estate in queue for housing

By Craig Westcott

CBS council will ask the Province if it has any comment before it moves to rezone land at 10 – 14 Rectory Road in Topsail to allow for infill building lots on Rectory Road itself and at the other end of the property which fronts on Route 60 facing Topsail Soccer Pitch.

The property is 1.9 acres in size with frontage of 53 metres on Rectory Road and 52 metres on Topsail Road. Most of the Rectory Road frontage is zoned Public and Institutional as it is located directly across from St. John the Evangelist Church and used to be owned by the Anglican Diocesan Synod of Newfoundland and Labrador. Changing the zoning on that portion of the land to residential would make it consistent across the whole of the property.

Council advertised a call for public input on the zoning request this past fall and received no submissions. If the Province has no concerns, the next step will be for the Town to appoint an independent commissioner to convene a public hearing. If the commissioner finds no fault with the application, it will fall to the Town to approve the zoning request and register it with the provincial government.
