Paradise home business raises traffic questions

By Mark Squibb

Paradise council earlier this month approved two new home-based businesses, including a home-based graphic design and artwork business at 15 Archibald Drive.

Councillor Sheldon Antle said that as the applicant would deliver products to clients, no additional vehicle traffic is expected. A notice of discretionary use was posted, and one objection was received.

“The objector feels that this is already a very busy street, and that this business will create an increase in traffic to the area,” said Antle. “The applicant has advised, however, that there will not be any onsite visits and all orders will be delivered or shipped. No increase in traffic is anticipated in the area due to commercial clients for the home-based business.”

Councillor Glen Carew, who spoke with two residents, said that while there would be no onsite visits, sending the products out for delivery could result in an increase of courier traffic.

“That road has been squeezed as a part of a traffic calming initiative, and any councillor around the table from the last term knows that we have had significant issues with residents with respect to traffic calming in that area, and traffic, not just speed, but volume,” said Carew.

The councillor said that should traffic become an issue, he would like council to revoke the permit.
The application was approved, subject to 11 conditions.

Council also approved a home-based tutoring business at 112 Elizabeth Drive. The application was advertised, and the Town received no objections.

Council unanimously approved the application, subject to 10 conditions.

Councillor Antle noted that as with other home-based business applications, this business will be monitored for a year.

“If there are any issues, the Town of Paradise has the right to withdraw the home-based business license,” said Antle.
