Carbonear insures itself against cyber attacks

The Town of Carbonear has decided to follow its insurance company’s advice and take out a policy against cyber-attacks.

Councillor Chris O’Grady, who chairs the finance committee, informed his fellow councillors the committee had been contacted by the Town’s insurance provider, which advised of a high frequency of cyberattacks on municipalities and recommended that Carbonear get cyber liability insurance.

“This coverage is recommended as these things become more common and can be very costly if they get into your system and lock it down,” said O’Grady.

The councillor noted the finance committee solicited quotes for such coverage and was recommending council accept the one from the Town’s general liability insurance provider, Cal LeGrow Insurance & Financial Group.

O’Grady then moved that Carbonear obtain the cyber liability insurance. The motion was seconded by councillor Peter Snow. The motion passed unanimously. The Town will pay $4,955 for a million dollars in coverage.

Also in his report, O’Grady moved to appoint Matthew Burke as the new by-law enforcement officer. The title will replace “municipal enforcement officer” following guidelines in the Towns and Local Service Districts Act, O’Grady explained.

O’Grady said Burke has a long history working in security. All voted in favour of hiring Burke.
