Seal Cove Bridge will be replaced, Hillier assures

First draft of Billy Brook stormwater study now in hand

Have no fear, Seal Cove bridge will be replaced sometime this year, says CBS councillor-at-large Rex Hillier.

Hillier offered the assurance at last week’s public council meeting in response to a call he had heard on VOCM Open Line.

“We’ve been doing some maintenance there over the last couple of weeks,” Hillier noted, “as that bridge has been there for some time. I was driving somewhere one morning, and I heard a gentleman on Open Line talking about the bridge and how we were doing stop gap maintenance on it, and it should be replaced. So, I thought this would be a good time just to remind people that we do have money budgeted for a new bridge in Seal Cove. The engineering is in the process of being completed and from there we’ll go to a call for tenders. So, there will be a new bridge in Seal Cove in the near future.”

That wasn’t the only piece of good news for some Seal Cove residents.

Ward 4 councillor Melissa Hardy, who represents that part of town and also chairs council’s engineering committee, said the long-awaited study on stormwater levels in Billy Brook is nearing completion.

“The draft (report) is received, staff received it this week, and now they’re in the process of reviewing the technical document and then will converse with the consultant on how we move forward to get a finalized document,” Hardy said. “For the residents in the area of Seal Cove, Morgans Road, and Garden Road that have been waiting to know if it has been received, it is received and it is with staff for technical review. So, stay tuned and we’ll certainly be able to provide residents (with) updates as we get more information.”

A number of property owners in the area have seen their building applications put on hold while the Town awaited the study. Council ordered the stormwater assessment because of the interest in development in the area and the history of other brooks and streams in CBS overflowing and flooding during storms.
