Harbour Main delays vote on commercial greenhouses

By Mark Squibb

Harbour Main-Chapel’s Cove-Lakeview council last week deferred voting on a greenhouse business application due to a number of concerns raised by residents.

“I will note that this business application has received a lot of feedback from the community,” Mayor Mike Doyle acknowledged at last week’s public council meeting. “And so, it’s my recommendation that this particular development application be deferred to our September meeting.”

Doyle said delaying the vote would give the Town time to gather together all the concerns brought forward by residents and submit them to the applicant so that he might address them.

The motion to defer the application was approved unanimously.

The application, which had been advertised according to provincial rules in The Shoreline, was for five greenhouses, each 30 feet wide by 80 feet long, built over a period of five years at 210-220 Point Road in Chapel’s Cove.

The applicant is proposing to operate them year-round producing leafy greens, cucumbers, peppers, and strawberries.

Residents have until August 9 to submit their comments to the Town.
