The manager of the Princess Sheila Nageira Theatre in Carbonear is looking forward to the 2nd Annual Heart for the Arts event this coming Thursday, a variety show that features Newfoundland artists and helps raise money for the theatre.

Suelynn Green said those who come to the show will be treated to a full gambit of genres, including upbeat Newfoundland Irish music, classic country, traditional Newfoundland music, new country, regular country, and folk music. There will also be a dance performance.

Green said the artists lined up for the show have either performed there before, or have wanted to do so.

“It’s a way of introducing new artists to an audience, or giving a chance for locals to see people that might not necessarily come across their paths,” said Green.

Featured acts include KitchinParti, Tyler Young, Vicki Doyle, Rodney Slade, Amanda Stone, Madison Sparkes, and the duo of Brooklyn Smith and Marissa Moyse.

The Princess Sheila Nageira Theatre, which is located inside the same building as the Town Hall, serves a wide area and population including Trinity Bay, Conception Bay North, and Placentia Bay. Even people from St. John’s come to the theatre. The theatre opened in September 1999, making this year its 25th anniversary. The facility is fully teched, air-conditioned, and boasts 379 soft seats. Heart for the Arts is the only fundraiser the theatre does during the year.

“We don’t have any corporate sponsorships or anything, so this fundraiser is very important to us,” said Green.

The revenue helps to fund events “of all shapes and sizes” throughout the year. Green said the relatively low ticket price of $20 for this event allows more people to see more artists.

Green said she and the others involved with the theatre are very much looking forward to the second Heart for the Arts show. Not only does it help support the theatre financially, it also promotes the arts and artists, something they are passionate about.

“Being able to bring the arts to the community is just such a positive thing to be able to do, and the arts just makes the world a better place,” said Green. “And that’s something that’s near and dear to our hearts, and we want to be able to continue to do that here in the community and increase the different types of things that we are able to bring, and the funds from these types of shows will help us be able to do that.”

Heart for the Arts will take place at the theatre on July 18, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the Heart for the Arts page on the website Eventbrite.
