Paradise mourns the loss of a guiding light

Today I lost a dear friend, and the Town of Paradise lost a treasured resident, my colleague Councillor Elizabeth Laurie. On behalf of the Town, I extend heartfelt condolences to her husband Harold Furlong, young daughters Laurie and Grace, her father and three sisters, and their families.
Elizabeth wore so many hats effortlessly – mother, wife, sister, friend, volunteer, and Councillor. She had a way of connecting with people that always placed others first and put everyone at ease. She radiated a gentle confidence that made her an exceptional leader who was thoughtful, compassionate, and hard-working.
Growing up on Laurie Road, watching and helping her Mother and family help others, instilled in Elizabeth a profound sense of community pride. Her own volunteerism began at a young age when she joined the Girl Guides, continued in high school as a member of the Holy Spirit Falconeers, and stayed with her throughout her life as she gave countless hours to a variety of community groups and organizations too numerous to mention.
Elizabeth was a trail blazer, although she never thought of herself that way. She was one of the youngest to be elected to Paradise Council in her first term, she was one of the first sitting municipal officials in our province to have a baby, and her career was in a non-traditional, male-dominated field. A strong advocate for equality, inclusion, and women in politics, she supported initiatives such as Equal Voice, the Women’s Caucus of Municipalities NL, and spoke at workshops, conferences, and events encouraging women to be involved in all levels of government. In 2022 she received a Women of Inspiration Award from Municipalities NL, in recognition of her work advocating and supporting women.
A pillar in our Town, Elizabeth has always called Paradise home. With her fierce love of her community, it was only natural she would offer herself for Council. She was first elected in 2009, and for the past 15 years, her dedication and commitment to Paradise was second to none and she served the residents tirelessly. Elizabeth had a term as Deputy Mayor, served on numerous Council Committees, and chaired the Imagine Paradise 10-year Municipal Plan Committee. She never shied away from making the tough decisions when they were the right decisions for Paradise. The growth and development of Paradise over the past decade and half has been, in large part, shaped by Elizabeth.
To me, Elizabeth was one of my dearest friends. She provided me with honest and thoughtful advice, she challenged me when I needed it, she supported me during life’s hardships, and our families celebrated life’s milestones together. She lived life to the fullest and shared that joy with all around her.
Elizabeth believed in Paradise and the Town believed in her. It is indeed a sad day in Paradise, and it won’t quite be the same without her. She has left an indelible legacy in our Town and Paradise is a better place because of Elizabeth Laurie.
Dan Bobbett
Mayor of Paradise
