Paradise hires accounting firm for annual audits

By Mark Squibb/February 3, 2022

Accounting firm BDO Canada LLP has been hired to audit the Town of Paradise’s financial statements.

Councillor Elizabeth Laurie, who chairs the finance committee, explained that as per the Municipalities Act, the Town must hire an auditor to report on its financial statements. In addition, the Town must prepare, and have audited, an Annual Ultimate Recipient Report as part of its federal gas tax funding agreement.

The Town issued a request for proposals for audit services which closed on December 10. Five proposals were received and evaluated by corporate services staff.

Each proposal was scored out of 100, with the technical component comprising 75 points and the financial component making up the remaining 25 points.

BDO Canada LLP was ranked the top candidate, and will charge $83,950, HST inclusive for the 2021 and 2022 financial and gas tax audits.

Councillor Larry Vaters asked, when conducting a review of the proposals, what was considered in terms of technical merits.

Chief administrative officer Lisa Niblock said that technical merits include past experience and experience with municipal governments, and that the town also requests the resume of each team member, amongst other things. Niblock offered to send Vaters a copy of the RFP.

The motion to hire BDO passed unanimously.
