Shearstown upgrades a matter of debits over credits

Bay Roberts council recently received a credit relating to a major infrastructure project, but the good news was quickly overshadowed by a much larger expense related to the same job.
During the February 10th public council meeting, public works director Sean Elms brought forward a credit of $23,973 relating to the Shearstown Road upgrade project for council’s approval.
“The contractor (Black Diamond) was given so many days to complete the project, and the contractor went over those days,” explained Elms.
Council was quick to approve the credit.
“We love to see credits,” joked Mayor Geoff Seymour.
Immediately following approval of the credit, Elms brought forward another motion. This one was for the purchase of $530,938, HST included, of additional materials, including topsoil, concrete, and asphalt.
The purchase of additional materials brings the project cost to $2,463,213.
The motion was approved unanimously, though Seymour allowed it was not as enjoyable as the previous one.
