Carbonear received a rating of five Blooms, and special mention for youth involvement in conserving local history in the latest Communities in Bloom Awards held in Stratford, Ontario last month.

“The youth of Carbonear play an active and vibrant role in their community, a fact that was evident throughout our tour of the town,” wrote judges Angelia Vieth and Seville Kwan in a joint statement. The pair visited Carbonear this past summer.

“At the Railway Museum, two young men warmly greeted us and shared the fascinating history of rail in the region,” the judges added. “At the Rorke Store Museum, students dressed in historical costumes brought the fishing industry’s story to life. They also appeared in period attire for ‘Stories on the Street,’ introducing us to the lives and experiences of the town’s early settlers.”

Councillor Wendy Penney, who chair’s council’s recreation and special events committee, thanked the young people involved for making such an impression on the judges.

“Great kudos going out to the youth in our community for that,” said Penney at last month’s public council meeting. “I think we were looking into some signage to put around at our boardwalk to acknowledge the great award that we did get.”

Carbonear competed in Communities in Bloom’s Atlantic Edition Category.
