Christine Butler running for re-election in CBS

By Mark Squibb

At Large Councillor Christine Butler is seeking a third term at the Conception Bay South council table.
“I’m excited and proud to represent our residents of Conception Bay South,” said Butler. “And I love being a councillor at large. I get to go from one end of town to the other and get to enjoy all the events and activities. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m out there, I’m very visible, I’m approachable, always courteous, and I have a very good response time for people approaching me, whatever it is. If I can’t help them, I’ll find out who can.”
Butler, known especially for her support of seniors and Special Olympians within the community, said she’s proud of the work council has completed over the last four years, including construction of the new library and new community park, continued work on the town’s trailways, continuation of sidewalk construction, and ongoing commitment to water and sewer installation. Looking ahead to the next four years, Butler is anticipating the construction of the pirate-themed accessible playground at Topsail Beach, replacement of Seal Cove bridge, and construction of the new recreation dome in Kelligrews.
She said she’s also excited for the re-opening of the Manuel’s River Interpretation Centre under the Town’s management following its acquisition of the centre earlier this year.
“We’ve had a lot of feedback, and a lot of public consultations,” said Butler. “There are all kinds of things that could happen. But it’s going to take some more work, and some more working with residents and businesses to see where we will go with it. But it’s all good. It’s always good to own a piece of property in town besides the town council building.”
A lack of public transportation and accessible, affordable housing in CBS are two areas that Butler said need to be addressed in the coming years.
Butler ran unsuccessfully in 2013 and again in a ward 2 by-election some years later. The third time proved to be a charm as Butler was elected to council in 2017, and again in 2021.
“I’ve got eight years in, and there’s still lots to be done and still lots I want to see done and things I want to do with the mayor and council, whoever they may be come October 2,” said Butler.
