CBS council proclaims International Week of Deaf People

CBS council proclaimed last week as the International Week of Deaf People. Participating in the proclamation were, from left: councillors Shelley Moores, Joshua Barrett, and Gerard Tilley, Mayor Darrin Bent, CBS resident Jeff Viguers, who is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of the Deaf (NLAD), Deputy Mayor Andrea Gosse, and councillors Rex Hillier, Warrick Cluney and Christine Butler. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the NLAD making it possibly the province’s oldest disability organization. Viguers told council, through an interpreter, that it means a lot for the group to get recognition from the Town, because it helps promote and encourage awareness about issues important to deaf people, including their culture, language and need for access. “So, thank you so much for standing with us,” said Viguers. “It’s a great help for creating a community that’s more inclusive for all of us.” Craig Westcott photo
