Double Ice Complex gym getting new equipment

By Mark Squibb

The Town of Paradise is buying over $30,000 worth of new equipment for the Double Ice Complex’s fitness centre.
During the November 10 public meeting, recreation lead councillor Jennifer Hiscock said staff completed an equipment assessment back in 2023, and based on that, had drafted a three-year plan to replace equipment on a priority basis.
Some $41,000 was budgeted this year for equipment replacement. The new equipment includes a treadmill, upright bike, elliptical, calf raise, power rack, leg press, leg extension, hamstring curl, and vertical knee raise.
Staff obtained quotes from Spartan Fitness, Matrix, and Treadmill Factory, and recommended council award the contract to lowest bidder Treadmill Factory for $31,536, HST included.
“I think it’s really important that we maintain that equipment up there,” said Hiscock. “We all know that regular household exercise equipment costs a lot of money, so therefore this commercial grade equipment is going to cost more, and it’s important we keep it up to par for our residents.”
Equipment was prioritized on factors such as the number of service calls required, a lack of available replacement parts for older equipment, and safety hazards presented by old equipment. Council approved the motion unanimously.
There was no mention of when the equipment will be delivered, or if it will be in place in time for folks hoping to work off the Christmas turkey in the new year.
