Save our postal service
Dear Editor:
Can Canada hold it together for just a minute? On the cusp of an election, right before the busy holiday season and just after a dry and dangerous summer, one thing that has remained steadfast in uniting our vast country is threatened and crumbling once more. It’s the same song and dance. Canada Post is striking again for the second, third or maybe fourth time in recent memory.
There is political pressure from our neighbours to the south and we can’t seem to hold it together for more than a few weeks when it comes to our nation’s only means of letter delivery. In a time when we desperately need a nation that is united, amidst political upheaval, varying levels of flawed leadership, public relations, an energy crisis, high interest rates and massive inflation, our postal system is slowly and painfully letting itself die.
To be sure, the workers are not to blame. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers deserves to fight for every penny that they can get. But is more division in our country necessary right now? One thing that unites our vast dominion is crumbling and it seems to be a reflection of every facet of our once proud and strong country. It is a sad day for Canada when the federal postal service’s existence is threatened. I don’t think any election can save us from this one.
Ryan Butt,
St. John’s
