New street name honours merchant mariners who died off Bell Island

The subdivision isn’t finished yet, but the names have been picked out for a couple of streets in the development taking shape in Kelligrews across from Hickey’s Funeral Home.
The roads will be called Everleigh Street and Leah Avenue respectively, after the developer’s granddaughters, and will connect to Butlers Road South. The intersection of Butlers Road South with Route 60 will be realigned as part of the project.
When completed, the subdivision will include 61 lots. The Town approved phase one of the project, consisting of one single family home and 17 duplexes, back in June.
Meanwhile, a new road in phase two of the Walker Grove subdivision off Hickory Place, near Pocket Road in Long Pond, will be called Saganaga Street.
The name honours the memory of the SS Saganaga, a merchant ship sunk by torpedoes from a German U-Boat off Bell Island on September 5, 1942. Thirty of the ship’s 44 merchant sailors died when the boat sank in less than three minutes.
Phase two of the 40-lot development consists of one single family home and 17 duplexes. The Town issued a permit for the work earlier this summer.
