Carbonear finishes in top tier of Canada’s most active communities

By Olivia Bradbury / Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Carbonear residents are proving again they are among the most physically active in the country, being named last week as one of the top 40 communities in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge.
Carbonear was one of only two communities in this province to make the list, the other being Clarenville, which took the title of Newfoundland and Labrador’s ‘Most Active Community’ for 2025.
Last year, Carbonear took home that honour and was awarded $15,000 to go towards physical activity initiatives. In addition to winning the provincial title, the town also placed in the top 50 list of Canada’s most active communities.
“To reach the Top 40 communities in Canada is a true testament of the commitment to physical activity among the residents and organizations of our community,” said Rob Button, Carbonear’s director of recreation. “Sure, we all want to win the top prize and status of the most active community, and it helps with motivation, but we are all winners in the journey of being active for life. The Town of Carbonear takes pride in providing individuals, of all ages and abilities, opportunities to realize their active for life goals.”
