Traffic delays afoot for Long Pond, parts of Seal Cove

Traffic at the intersection of Sobey’s Supermarket and Terminal Road in Long Pond, CBS may be facing delays for the next month or so.

The slowdowns are due to upgrades being made to the traffic lights at the intersection with Terminal Road, which leads to the wharf in Long Pond harbour.

Councillor-at-Large Rex Hillier issued an advisory about the work during last week’s council meeting, asking motorists to exercise caution while passing through the construction zone. 

“We did a major upgrade of Terminal Road last year,” Hillier noted. “It’s not totally completed. I believe there is another lift of asphalt that needs to go on and some other work that has to be done, and part of that is an upgrade to the traffic lights.”

Hillier added that roadwork is also going to start soon on some of the streets that saw water and sewer lines installed last year. Those streets include Stage Head Road and Caseys Road in Seal Cove, and Braeside Lane and Dicks Place in Long Pond.

“This work is anticipated to last four weeks,” Hillier said. “Please use caution and expect delays when travelling through construction zones. These are streets we started last year, and we’re pretty much finished.”

The infrastructure was laid as part of phase 49 of the Town’s ongoing water and sewer installation program. Hillier said householders on those streets can connect to the water and sewer lines by contacting the public works department.

“Just to point out, as of December 2024, 94 per cent of our homes in Conception Bay South are eligible to connect to water and sewer services,” Hillier said. “So, we’re moving along, in some places slower than people would hope for, but certainly we’re moving in the right direction.”

Mayor Darrin Bent agreed. “We are moving in the right direction,” he said, “it’s just so expensive to get there is the unfortunate part and it isn’t getting any cheaper.”
