Carbonear council has decided to put its decision to buy and install a new phone system at the swimming pool on hold.
The building which houses the pool had been experiencing problems with its phone system for several months, making it a recurring topic at council. Back in March, councillor Malcolm Seymour, who chairs the recreation committee, argued the malfunctioning phone system was the biggest challenge for people trying to book access to the pool. So council passed a motion to buy a new phone system. However, at their April 15 meeting, councillors decided to defer that decision.
The current provider of phone equipment at the pool is Bell Aliant. Under a second motion that Seymour made at the April 15 meeting, the Town would have purchased a new system from Alt Telecom, based in St. John’s.
Chief Administrative Officer Cynthia Davis explained the reason behind the motion’s deferral.
“I just wanted to clarify that there seems to be some changes made in that area and there haven’t been any issues with the phone system as this point in time,” said Davis. “So, the committee felt that, rather than move forward with it, we’d kind of hold off. It’s quite possible the problems we were experiencing may be corrected now and the upgraded system may not be required.”
All councillors voted in favour of deferring the motion to replace the system.
