New CBS street name has WWII connection

By Craig Westcott

CBS council has approved the name for a new subdivision under construction at 135 – 137 Seal Cove Road.

The new street will be called Fencer Place.

“I don’t know if we’ve really chatted about how these names come about,” said councillor-at-large Joshua Barrett, who made the motion to approve the new name. “Oftentimes developers propose names and ideas based on a path or a family name, or whatever the case is.”

Barrett said the first step is to run the name through the Town’s naming committee and by Emergency Services to ensure there’s no similarly named street that could confuse first responders when answering a call for help.

In the case of Fencer Place, Barrett said, the name relates to the last navy ship the developer’s father served on in World War II, the HMS Fencer

“We did our searches, we worked with our fire departments, and that checks out,” Barrett said.

“It’s great to have an explanation as to the background of the name, because we have a lot of street names and road names here in Conception Bay South and not everybody will remember where they originally came from,” said Mayor Darrin Bent. “Now it’s on the record, if anybody ever wants to know.”
