Paradise hoping feds will cover more road work

By Mark Squibb

The Town of Paradise is asking the federal government for nearly $900,00 to complete road work around town.

Councillor Deborah Quilty, during the September 17 public meeting, explained that the 2024 Capital Street Program includes the installation of new storm, sewer, curb, gutter, and sidewalk along Glenderek Drive, and additional sidewalk along the north side of Topsail Road from McDonald’s restaurant to the Mount Pearl boundary.

Quilty said council had allocated funds for the work in Budget 2024, and that Town staff recommend applying to the federal government’s Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF) for additional money to complete the work.

Quilty noted the Town has been successful getting funding from that program in the past, and moved that the Town apply through the CCBF to fund the 2024 Capital Street Program in the amount of $876,631, HST included.

Councillor Patrick Martin seconded the motion, and all members present at the meeting voted in favour of the motion. Mayor Dan Bobbett and councillors Larry Vaters and Glen Carew were absent.

The federal government has budgeted over $2.4 billion annually for the funding program.
