Spaniard’s Bay council approved a number of donations for various community causes during its public meeting last month.
Firstly, council discussed donating to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, and decided to donate $100, which will be received by Spaniard’s Bay’s own Holy Redeemer Elementary.
Kids Eat Smart provides food to Newfoundland and Labrador students for free at school. Every dollar donated to the foundation goes towards a free breakfast for a child.
“It all comes back to our children, especially the ones that have a greater need for it,” said Mayor Paul Brazil.
Council also discussed donating to the CBN Legendary Car Club’s 27th Annual Carbonear Car Show/Shine, which took place on August 17th and 18th. The show was held in aid of the Tri-Con Gentle Giants Special Olympics. Brazil remarked the show supports a great cause, and that some children in Spaniard’s Bay are part of the Tri-Con Gentle Giants program. Council decided on a donation of $25.
Lasty, council voted to donate $100 to the Baccalieu Trail SPCA. The animal shelter, which is located on Gullies Road in Spaniard’s Bay, recently faced financial hardships which threatened to close its doors. The shelter made a public appeal for help, which was met with great support. As a result of public generosity, the shelter is not currently in danger of closing. However, the public is now more aware of the difficulties the shelter has faced and how costly it is to provide its services. According to treasurer Tony Smith, it costs about $200,000 a year to run the shelter. Deputy Mayor Tammy Oliver suggested council give more than a standard donation.
“They’re really in a hard situation,” said Oliver.
