Paradise rejigs Karwood crosswalk electrical work

Contractors working on the Karwood Drive crosswalk in Paradise have been given the go ahead to reroute electrical cables and make other changes after it was discovered the infrastructure was located in an inconvenient spot.
“During construction, the conduit and cables that supply power and communications to the pedestrian activated traffic light to the controller were located and determined to be directly underneath the new raised crosswalk,” explained Deputy Mayor Kimberley Street. “It was also discovered that the depth of burial was shallow, and the conduits would be located in the bedding directly underneath the new concrete crosswalk.”
Street said the current conduit location would prevent compaction of the bedding material, which may deteriorate the concrete over time.
Staff asked the contractor, Farrell’s Excavating Ltd., for a quote to reroute the conduit cables away from the raised crosswalk.
Farrell’s submitted a price of $4,500 plus HST, to supply and install new cables away from the raised crosswalk.
Council approved the change order unanimously at a total cost of $5,175, HST included.
Work on the crosswalk, situated near Paradise Elementary, began July 2.
