More W&S work for side streets in Long Pond and Upper Gullies

Work is set to begin Monday on Phase 49 of Conception Bay South’s water and sewer program.
Earlier this month council awarded the $3.09 million contract to Dexter Construction.
Five lanes are scheduled for water and sewer installation in this phase, including Dicks Place and Dicks Lane in Long Pond, Caseys Road in Upper Gullies, Stage Head Road in Seal Cove, and Braeside Lane off Stoney Hill Road in Long Pond.
“I’m very pleased that we’re able to continue as a council in doing that,” said Mayor Darrin Bent. “It’s very necessary work in moving further down that list that a lot of people are on anxiously awaiting to get to the top. And you can’t get to the top unless we keep spending the money, and we’ve pledged to do that and we’re doing that again tonight, $3 million more of water and sewer work here in Conception Bay South.”
Council has also awarded the contract for street upgrading, paving and sidewalks. Modern Paving Limited won that $3.2 million contract.
Among the streets getting work this summer are Terminal Road in Long Pond and its intersection with Route 60, along with an upgrade to the traffic lights. Other streets include Chanterelle Drive from Fowlers Road to Carrigan, Mercers Road, and Tampa Drive, all in Chamberlains; Webster Place, Topsail; and Warfords Road, Upper Gullies; Sidewalk construction is set for Route 60 from Cole Thomas Drive to Comerfords Road in Upper Gullies, and in Topsail from Mainsail Drive to Carters Lane.
Bent was especially pleased to see the sidewalk work already started in some parts of town and expanding.
“I believe we’re heading a little closer to Topsail Beach,” said the mayor. “It’s good, and the street upgrades are perfect. And I noticed today that there’s a new level of asphalt out there on Minerals Road, so the maintenance covers are equal to the pavement now… And I know people will be really pleased that the speed hump (on Minerals Road) is not as humpy as it used to be, it’s the way it’s supposed to be now and it’s a little easier on vehicles.”
The Minerals Road upgrades were part of a separate contract, one awarded last year to Eric Taylor Ltd., for just over $2 million.
