Paradise councillors trade committee hats

By Mark Squibb

Members of Paradise town council this week wore their new committee hats for the first time since switching things up recently.

Councillor Deborah Quilty, who helmed the engineering committee for the better part of a decade, will now chair the planning committee, with Deputy Mayor Kimberley Street and newly minted councillor Tommy Maher, who was absent from this week’s meeting, sitting as members.

Quilty said she sat on the planning committee many moons ago, and was thankful staff were able to make her feel like she had never left.

And although she will no longer chair the engineering committee, Quilty will still sit as a member, along with councillor Glen Carew. Deputy Mayor Street, who formerly chaired the planning committee, will now chair the engineering committee.

Councillor Carew, who formerly chaired the recreation committee, will now chair the public works committee with councillors Partick Martin and Larry Vaters sitting as members.

Martin, who formerly chaired the public works committee, will now chair recreation. Deputy Mayor Street and councillor Carew will sit as members.

Councillor Vaters will continue to chair the administration committee, with councillors Maher and Quilty sitting as members.

As to external committees, Deputy Mayor Street will sit on the Regional Wastewater Committee and Northeast Joint Council. Vaters will sit on St. John’s Regional Fire Committee, Eastern Regional Services Board, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Martin will sit on the diversity and inclusion committee, Peter Barry Duff Commission, and Visions Employment.
