Royal Canadian Legion hold fundraiser for St. Vincent de Paul Foodbank

Members of the Carbonear branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held a fundraiser last month to help out the St. Vincent de Paul Foodbank. Money was raised through the sale of tickets on roast beef suppers, a 50/50 draw, and several prize draws. Throughout the day, a wealth of local performers volunteered their time and talent to perform for a full house, said Kaitlin Clarke, the communications and outreach coordinator with the SSVP Carbonear Foodbank. The performers included Howard Keats, Perry Short, Kerry Noel, Grace Forward, Jim Forward, Maxine Morgan, Harold Priddle, Kevin Parsons, Keith Parsons, Larry Baldwin, Hannah Lavoie, Kevin Mercer, Ben Lewis, Jack Smith, Paul Martin, Dean Windsor, Amanda Dowden, Keith Coombs, Mose Butt, Carl Lundrigan, and Trevor Snow. Robert Howell contributed his time to work the sound system. Wendy Cheater was the Master of Ceremonies. A delicious roast beef supper was available as eat-in or takeout, with some delivered to the Charwood Legion Manor thanks to Lynette Murphy. The meal was prepared by Gary Laing with help in the kitchen from Lloyd Laing, Peggy Laing, Jim Forward, Stephanie Clarke, Carolyn Parsons Antle, Jamie Rowe, Hal Evely, and Denis Murhpy. Debbie Laing and Paula Evely were on hand to help with the bar. Volunteers from the foodbank were available throughout the day to act as greeters, sell 50/50 and prize draw tickets, and help pass out meals and takeouts. “The event was a huge success and raised over $4500 in aid of the food bank,” said Clarke. “A massive thank you is in order to all those who helped with the event, purchased tickets, and showed up to enjoy the day.” Volunteers and a staff person were presented with a cheque by Legion members on Tuesday, March 26. On hand for the presentation were, from left: Hal Evely, Gary Laing, Miriam Moore, Kenny Tucker, Mike Butt, Paula Evely, Kaitlin Clarke, Lloyd Laing, and Alda Jarvis.
