Paradise Elementary principal Deb Smith was welcomed at school by a crowd fit for a queen Thursday morning.

Thursday morning was not only the last day of school for students, but Smith’s last day as a school administrator.

Students lined the school’s driveway and waved colorful flags and homemade signs wishing Smith a happy retirement.

“This is unreal,” said Smith. “It’s overwhelming to see the students here, all 519 students that we have. They’ve been a big part of my life.”

She said retirement will be a big change, but she’s ready for new adventures.

“There’s always a lot of excitement on the last day of school,” said Smith. “There are some mixed emotions for me — I’m glad the summer is coming, but like I said, it’s the beginning of a new chapter, a new adventure for me. They will be a few tears shed today.”

Smith has served at Paradise Elementary for four years, three years as principal, and has worked in the education field for over 30 years.
