Bay Roberts to formalize speedbump policy

By Mark Squibb / June 16, 2023

The Town of Bay Roberts plans to adopt a speedbump policy at the next public meeting which will dictate where speed bumps will and will not be placed within the town.

During this week’s meeting, CAO Nigel Black noted the Planning and Development Committee had been tasked with coming up with a speed bump policy to present to council for adoption.

“We, as a committee, felt that we should maintain our current practise, which is the practise of having speed bumps on Town facilities, recreation facilities, parks, dog parks or whatever the parks might be, and school areas only,” said Black. “There was some discussion of whether or not we should include daycares. The recommendation of the committee is that we do not include daycares, as they are private businesses, and they could come and go over time. There are only a couple of them that are large enough that we thought they might warrant it, but again, they could be out of business tomorrow, so we felt it was better to leave the policy as is, though we felt we should formalize it and have some language in the policy about turning down requests, so that they aren’t coming to council when they don’t meet the policy.”

Mayor Walter Yetman said that formalizing the policy would help reduce gray areas.

Black explained that if council were agreeable to the terms of the conditions, the committee would draft a policy to bring to council for adoption.

“But I didn’t want to do that until we got your thoughts on the matter,” said Black.

Deputy Mayor Geoff Seymour motioned that the committee draft the speedbump policy, which councillor Dean Franey seconded.

Councillor Silas Badcock said that the points presented by the CAO seemed pretty straightforward, and Black said the policy will be essentially as was presented, only in a more official format.

Council voted in favour of the motion.
