Sledge stars get boost with free ice at Paradise rinks

By Mark Squibb/August 26, 2022

The Town of Paradise has donated ice time at the Double Ice Complex to two young sledge hockey stars.

“Liam Hickey and Gavin Baggs are training for a selection game for an upcoming national team during the first week of September, and they are looking to skate twice a week for the month of August, and then once a week during the fall,” explained councillor Elizabeth Laurie. “They are flexible on the time of day they can skate.”

Due to the time restraint of the request from Para Hockey, the item was not discussed at committee, but was voted on by council through an e mail poll on August 8.

Council voted unanimously to donate ice time that would otherwise remain unrented. The value of the ice time is $3,400.

Laurie noted the Town has in the past donated ice time to para-athletes training for competitions.

Hickey hails from St. Johns, while Baggs lives in Paradise.
