Bay Roberts making plans for Come Home Year

By Mark Squibb/March 17, 2022

With this past week’s snow and cold temperatures, it’s hard to believe spring, and even summer, are around the bend. But Director of Tourism and Economic Development Ron Delaney is busy planning for the warm months.

“It’s starting to be a pretty busy time for us, just because summer is coming and it’s now the time to try and get volunteers back having meetings, and after almost two years of no meetings or Zoom meetings, we’re trying to get the creative juices flowing again and get people back into it, especially where it’s Come Home Year,” said Delaney.

The director offered council a department update and fielded questions.

He said plenty of activities are still being planned, but the department was early out of the gate announcing the Come Home Year Concert, scheduled for July 30 at the Bay Arena, and the annual Songs, Stages, and Seafood Festival, scheduled for May 25 – 29.

Delaney said more events are being planned in the coming weeks, with youths, seniors, and everyone in between in mind.

The Town has also applied for funding for various projects, including Come Home Year Funding, beach cleanups, and local outdoor concerts.

Councilor Frank Deering asked if there was anything to be done to encourage people to clean up their properties, as Come Home Year is on the horizon.

Delaney said awards often encourage folks to keep tidy properties, but for residents who don’t seem interested in that, a more proactive approach is needed, namely action from council. Mayor Walter Yetman agreed, saying that a solid plan is needed.
