Queen Elizabeth Pioneers honoured at annual awards night

Queen Elizabeth Regional High School honored its athletic community this past week at the annual sports awards’ night.

Dozens of students were honoured across multiple sports, including softball, cross country, cheerleading, volleyball, soccer, basketball, frisbee, ball hockey, rugby, badminton, golf, archery, and track and field.

Students were recognised for their skills, spirit, dedication, and sportsmanlike attitude.

The school also recognised male and female sportsmanship medallists and male and female athletes of the year.

The Female School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) Medal was awarded to Marcienne Theriault, while the Male SSNLO Medal was awarded to Jesse Harnum.

Molly Gill was named Female Athlete of the Year. During the 2022-2023 season, Gill was a member of the school’s Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, ice hockey, outdoor and indoor soccer, ball hockey, and track and field teams. Gill received a number of other accolades, including the SSNL Athlete Award, which is awarded to students who have participated in three or more SSNL sports while maintaining an 85+ average. Gill was also named a recipient of the 2022-2023 School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Brother G.I Moore Student Athlete of the Year Award for 4A Classification. This is awarded in recognition for a strong dedication to school sports with a commitment to participation, sportsmanship and athletic excellence.

Ethan Gilbert was named Male Athlete of The Year. Gilbert played on the school’s ball hockey, track and field, and golf teams, but his presence was most felt on the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers ice hockey team. Gilbert was named the hockey team’s MVP and Top Scorer, and will go down in the school’s history books for scoring six goals in the second game of this year’s Fred Squires Shield Tournament.
