Spaniard’s Bay loses another councillor

By Local Journalism Initiative Olivia Bradbury

Ann Marie Singleton says she resigned from Spaniard’s Bay council because of “negative treatment” from other councillors.

Singleton is the second member of council to quit this year. Deputy Mayor Gerald Sheppard resigned in June.

“The reason I resigned from council was because of the bullying and intimidation outside the chambers,” said Singleton. “It affected my mental health, and I was left with no choice but to resign. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Tilton – Spaniard’s Bay.”

Asked to clarify her statement, Singleton said it was other council members who were responsible for the bullying but did not say who or how many members had allegedly done so.

Although she is no longer a councillor, Singleton said she hopes to continue contributing to her community, including in the recruitment of volunteers for a gay pride walk and flag raising.

“I’m sure activities can be arranged that doesn’t have to involve the town council,” Singleton said, referring to a debate earlier this year over whether the Town should sponsor a flag raising during Gay Pride Week.

The by-election to fill Singleton’s vacated seat on council is scheduled for December 1, with nomination day set for October 29.
