Home-based bakery gets approval at Paradise council

By Craig Westcott

Paradise council has approved several home-based businesses, including a bakery and a government consulting company.

The latter, described as a policy analysis and advisory service by councillor Sheldon Antle, who introduced the motion to issue permits to the businesses last week, is located at 79 Rembrandt Boulevarde, which is within a residential medium zone.

Antle noted the application was advertised and no objections were received. Ten conditions have been attached to the Town’s approval and the business’s activities will be monitored for a year to make sure it doesn’t disrupt the neighbourhood.

“There’s no impacts on traffic, there’s no real impacts to the residents of the surrounding area,” Antle said. “I wish the applicant well. I think the province could certainly benefit overall, we can all benefit from additional policy analysis and advisory services.”

The home-based bakery will be located at 69 Trenton Drive, also a residential area, in this case near Octagon Elementary.

No objections were received when the application was advertised. It too was approved subject to 10 conditions, which were not enumerated during the council meeting.

“The home-based business is the preparing of baked goods with a maximum of three clients within the property on any given day,” Antle said. “Essentially, it’s baking and then it’s heading out, so it’s not going to be a storefront, it’s not really there for people coming back and forth, and the residents on Trenton Drive get the added bonus of the smell of baked goods every morning when they wake up.”

The third home-based business approved was for a travel agency at 142 St. Thomas Line.

Like the others, no objections were received when the application was advertised, and its operation is subject to 10 conditions.

“This is an online business,” said Antle. “There won’t be people going back and forth on a regular basis disrupting residents in the area. Obviously, it will be monitored as per the conditions for home-based businesses. Again, I wish the individual all the best and I hope they plan some happy vacations for some of our Paradise residents.”
