Holyrood’s proposed cell tower is a go

By Mark Squibb

Bell is moving ahead with installation of a new communications tower off Liam Hickey Drive in a bid to improve poor cellular service in Holyrood.

Holyrood was one of three communities, the others being Heart’s Delight-Islington and Trinity East, earmarked for $2 million in provincial funding in 2025. The money will be doled out over the next five years.
“Bell conducted a public consultation last fall, and there were no responses received on that consultation, and so the tower is a go for that site on Liam Hickey Drive,” said Deputy Mayor Michele Woodford. “What we have to do now is we’re going to try and reach out to Bell and get some kind of timeline to see when that’s going to be completed.”

The provincial government, meanwhile, did not specify how much each individual community is getting.
Councillor Steve Winsor, in remarks aimed at social media towards the end of the meeting, noted that while there was no public feedback to the public consultation, there was lots of talk online.

“This is another topic where there was a lot of chatter on social media, which we observe, but we don’t get into, and for good reason,” said Winsor. “If it’s happening on social media and it’s not official, I would literally call it fake news. Sorry, that’s all I got to say.”
