Carbonear sets Nomination Day for municipal election

Carbonear residents will vote in person again in this coming fall municipal election, council has decided, and will not offer voting by mail.
That and other decisions about the October 2 vote were approved during council’s July 17 public meeting.
Town Clerk Cathy Somers noted no requests for mail-in voting have been received at the Town Hall, so she recommended the Town hold in-person voting for the election as usual.
The Town will hold a single nomination day on Thursday, September 4, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
An advance poll for voters to cast their ballots will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. That is the Saturday prior to the election.
Somers will serve as the Returning Officer for the election, with the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Cynthia Davis, serving as the alternate returning officer.
The final motion approved by council pertained to whether the mayoral ballot would be separate from that of the councillors. Some towns have a separate ballot for mayor —Carbonear has traditionally done so. Somers verified that they want to continue this by way of resolution. The appropriate motion was made by Deputy Mayor Sam Slade and seconded by councillor Chris O’Grady and passed unanimously.
