Some of the best paintings and sculptures in the province were on sale at the CBS Town Hall in Long Pond on Saturday, June 7 as the Town held its first Visual Art Exhibit and Sale featuring works by 52 local artists. Town employee Kayleigh Mercer came in on her day off to survey the works and purchase a couple of items. One of the most striking sculptures was the one next to Mercer in this photo. ‘Thank God’ was created by CBS metal sculptor Ian Gillies. The head, tail and spine of the fish were crafted from the hull of an old fishing shipwreck. “The skeleton and rust represent the deterioration of the fishery,” wrote Gillies in a note about the work. “But the sturdy steel and circular shape represent the endurance of our people and the cod fishery.” Craig Westcott photo
