Dunns Hill Intersection changes made permanent

Frog Pond Road, Greeleytown Road and the intersection of Dunns Hill Road and Route 60 are all in for attention as part of the Town of Conception Bay South’s latest street upgrading and paving program.
Modern Paving has won the tender to take on the work, which is valued at $1.98 million, HST included.
“This includes stormwater system installation along Greeleytown Road from the Conception Bay Highway to All Saints,” said councillor-at-large Joshua Barrett. “The road will also be upgraded with curb, gutter and sidewalks in this section.”
Barrett said Frog Pond Road will get another layer of asphalt.
The first layer was added two years ago after the Town installed water and sewer lines on the street. That work disrupted the flow of water to the Frog Pond, which has yet to be rectified leaving the gully, which is much beloved by Topsail residents, dry most of the time.
The third project will put to rest a couple of pilot schemes that have been tried on the busy, blind turn in Foxtrap where Dunns Hill Road meets Route 60.
“Certainly, for as long as I’ve been on council we’ve been doing this pilot project on Dunn’s Hill Road and I guess it’s a pilot no more,” Barrett said. “We are working to make those changes permanent… Over the past five years we’ve been working to improve that area of town, we’ve had a couple of renditions, a couple of layouts, and have been working with consultants and subject matter experts in terms of what makes the most sense.”
Barrett said the latest pilot scheme has been in place for some time, and the Town believes it is the best solution. It allows left hand turns onto Dunns Hill Road from the westbound lane of Route 60, but prohibits left turns onto the highway from anyone coming off the side road.
“So, this is what we’re moving forward with,” he said. “Certainly, like with any intersection, or any road in the town, should this be deemed unsafe in the future, we will look at it again.”
Barrett said some work will start this fall, but most of it will be done next year.
