Brigus councillor wants to address road risks near daycare

Brigus councillor Gerald Mercer says something needs to be done to protect the safety of children attending a daycare from traffic conditions in the area.

Mercer served the warning at the town’s September 8 council meeting.

Mercer pointed out there is no traffic signage near the daycare on Station Road. The situation has been known for a while, Mercer said, adding a previous councillor had promised it would be taken care of, but nothing was ever done.

“That was two years ago,” said Mercer. “It’s too late when something happens. And I tell you one thing, on that turn, there’s something’s going to happen.”

Deputy Mayor Michael McDonald agreed. “There’s no signage there at all, you’re right,” he said.

Mercer noted the conditions will be worse come winter. “You know they come over and it’s slippery one of these mornings and children cross the road. We don’t know what could happen,” he said. “It’s time now. We need to put it to bed.

MacDonald asked Mayor Shears Mercer Jr. if the Town could put some ‘children crossing’ signs on the road.

However, MacDonald was told that signage on the road is the responsibility of the provincial Department of Transportation.

Mayor Mercer suggested that Town staff contact the department and ask for the signage.
