Tires amongst debris hauled out of Holyrood sewage plant

By Mark Squibb

The Town of Holyrood has taken the first steps toward upgrading the local sewer treatment plant.

During the June 2 public meeting, councillor Charlotte Storey noted that Pardy’s had completed the cleanout of the oxidation ditch, clarifier, and sludge holding tank.

“Bulk solids and debris have been removed from the site for processing within the Foxtrap facility,” said Storey. “Pardy’s filled two, 40-yard rolls of bins with debris from filtering the solid contents.  Large rocks, rags, beer bottles, metal, tires, etc.”

The upgrades will bring the facility up to snuff with federal regulations.

The project will be completed in three phases over the next few years.

Phase 1 included the cleanup, as well as head works design and building designs, order of clarification parts, installation of clarification parts and head works. Phase 2 will see the replacement of the lift stations, including underground chambers and overflow pipes, and Phase 3 will see final upgrades to the plant.

Council had initially estimated the project cost at about $1.4 million, but further review and an expansion of the scope of work pushed that cost to about $2.2 million. The Town had secured over $2 million in funding and is looking to secure further funding.
