Dawe named deputy mayor of Clarke’s Beach

By Olivia Bradbury / Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Clarke’s Beach council has elected the successor of Deputy Mayor June Anne Batten, who passed away on January 20. She served on council from 2021-2025, and was re-elected during last year’s municipal election.
At their regular meeting on March 3, council held an election to determine which of its members would take over the role. Town clerk Joan Wilcox asked for nominations and two were put forward, with Alice Russell nominating Kelly Kavanagh and Terri Lee Bishop nominating Stephen Dawe.
The two councillors were asked if they accepted their nominations. Dawe accepted, while Kavanagh declined. As a result, Dawe was named deputy mayor by acclamation.
As a result of Batten’s passing, Clarke’s Beach has an empty seat on council.
The nomination day to fill this role is set for March 17. If there is more than one nominee, an election will be held on April 14.
