Carbonear air cadets grounded by Town’s insurance company

By Craig Westcott

The company that insures the Town of Carbonear’s public buildings looks to be grounding some of the activities of the local air cadet squadron.
Members of Squadron 589 have been holding air rifle practice in the basement of the Princess Sheila Building on Water Street for some 30 years. But that’s no longer allowed.
Peter Snow, who chairs council’s finance committee, told council last month the cadets have requested a meeting to revisit council’s decision to ban the use of air rifles in the building.
“The Town’s insurance (provider) has been contacted and the Town’s insurance will not respond if named in a claim,” said Snow. “This means that if the Town is named in a claim any defense will be the responsibility of the Town of Carbonear as well as any award for damages, therefore ultimately the taxpayers, and we certainly don’t want to put the taxpayers in that position. So, we’ll have to look at that issue very, very closely.”
Snow said his committee is recommending that council meet with the cadets and update them on the situation.
